BILL SHARP

After basic training I was posted to Trail, BC until June 69
when I was transferred to Burnaby, arriving there the same
day as Jim Howie who came in from Ft. St. John, BC.
In 1972 I married Dianne who I'm still married to and we
had two kids, a girl born in 75 and a boy in 78. The boy,
Travis, is a member presently posted at North Vancouver
Detachment.
In 1975 I was transferred to Castlegar, BC and stayed there
4 years. This was the best posting in my service and we
really enjoyed the West Kootenays and all the guys I
worked with and their wives.
In 79 I was transferred back to the LMD, this time to Surrey
where I was promoted to Cpl. in 81. I spent 9 years in
Surrey until 88 when I was promoted to Sgt. and transferred
to North Vancouver as 2i/c of a watch.

After three years there I was transferred to Langley where I became a watch commander until the powers-to-be decided that S/Sgts
should be the watch commanders. So after 2 years in Langley I was posted back to Surrey where I was the 2i/c of a 32 man watch.
Surrey was a busy place - lots of fatals, murders and other mayhem and it hasn't changed to this day.In 99 I was promoted to S/Sgt.
and became a watch commander in Coquitlam where I served 3 years until being lateralled in 2001 back to Langley where I live.
After 10 more years in Langley I retired in 2011. All of my 43.5 years of service was on GD and several times I was tempted to leave
the force and try a different career. Why didn't I? Well, I liked police work too much and so why change? I've never regretted not
leaving.
Since retiring I've spent 3 years writing a book about my service including basic training and it was published by Friesen
Press in June 2014. It is titled Cop - Forty-Three Years In The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and surprisingly there have
been positive reviews since it came out. It's available online via Amazon, Friesen Press, Chapters etc.
Besides Jim Howie in Burnaby, I've only run into Bruce Waite several times over the years and Gary Tuffs once at Gastaldo
Tailors when he was posted at Coquitlam Det. in 1971 or so.
Now that we are retired my wife and I enjoy travelling to warmer climes in the winter time and are just enjoying life.
